November 10, 2023
The Parliamentary Friends of a Democratic Burma in Canada issued a statement on November 9, urging the Canadian government to officially recognize the National Unity Government as the legitimate government of Myanmar.
The statement also recommended three key actions that the Canadian government should take to improve the human rights and social well-being of the people of Myanmar.
((1) To provide direct assistance to the areas controlled by the National Unity Government and its allies.
((2) To provide assistance for airstrike early warning systems, basic infrastructure, and access to information within those areas.
((3) For the Canadian government to officially recognize the National Unity Government as the legitimate government of Myanmar and to enhance diplomatic engagement with it.
The statement also urged that priority be given to providing airstrike early warning systems to the people of Myanmar, as the terrorist military council continues to carry out airstrikes targeting civilian areas.
On October 25, members of the National Unity Government (NUG), including Union Minister for Human Rights U Aung Myo Min, Deputy Minister U Aung Kyaw Moe, Presidential Advisor and spokesperson for the Office of the President U Kyaw Zaw, met with Canadian Members of Parliament at the Parliament building, including those actively engaged in Myanmar's issues through the Parliamentary Friends of a Democratic Burma group.
Following the meeting and discussions, the statement urging the Canadian government, which was issued more than two weeks later, has now been released.
